Learn how to transform a typical literacy night into an event that significantly increases the likelihood families will be able to interact with their children through literacy at home. Participants will learn to identify the 5 essential elements that must be addressed in every family engagement effort, understand how to use an observation tool to determine if family engagement efforts embed the 5 essential elements and engage in proven literacy strategies to share with families. In addition, we will cover how to categorize family engagement events and how to identify high impact strategies vs. low impact strategies.

Forum 3: Communication Practices That Build Family Capacity

Speakers: Jenni Brasington, Scholastic Family and Community Engagement (FACE)

Date and Time: Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018 | 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Location: Museum of Nature & Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd, Denver

Registration for Forum 3 will open at a later date.

During this session participants will learn and practice strategies for engaging families at home and at school that build capacity. Teachers will learn how to move from compliance engagement to implementing quality interactions with families anytime anywhere. During this session, you will learn how to understand the difference between oneway and two-way communication, learn how to invite dialogue rather than telling parents what to do, and learn the importance of active listening.

Forum 4: Differentiating Family Support: Equitable Strategies to Meet the Needs of All Families

Speakers: Jenni Brasington and Maria Fernandez, Scholastic Family and Community Engagement (FACE)

Date and Time: Saturday, April 14, 2018 | 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Location: TBD

Registration for Forum 4 will open at a later date.

During this session participants learn how to move beyond implementing “one size fits all” family engagement to implementing strategies that individualize and recognize the unique strengths of each family. By the end, they will understand the importance of respecting and addressing the needs of all families and learn strategies to tailor practices to unique cultural and linguistic family needs.

We encourage participants to attend all four module trainings as they build on one another, but we welcome participation in one, two or three trainings. Earn extra points towards your early childhood professional credential by attending the full training series.
