Juneteenth in Denver is right around the corner. The day, celebrated on June 19, is the oldest nationally recognized commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in 1965 when enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free – more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Today, Juneteenth is a time to honor freedom and celebrate Black history and achievements. Denver Preschool Program (DPP) offers resources to help spark conversations about Juneteenth with your child and upcoming Denver events that honor the holiday.

Resources to Teach Your Preschooler about Juneteenth

Picture books are a powerful way to introduce big ideas to preschoolers in a way they can understand. Many of the books, like these titles recommended by PBS Parents, use songs, rhymes, and colorful illustrations to share the history and meaning of Juneteenth – making them perfect for young readers and listeners alike.

Other resources, like the digital activity guide from the National Museum of African American History and Culture, help families have deeper conversations about the history and significance of Juneteenth. This guide includes conversation starters about the meaning of freedom, recommended books, and engaging activities for kids of all ages.

Age-appropriate videos and programs can be a great starting point for meaningful conversations. This short, illustrated segment from Rocky Mountain PBS offers a kid-friendly introduction to the history and significance of Juneteenth, helping your child understand why it’s an important part of our nation’s story.

Denver Activities and Events that Honor Juneteenth

Looking for a hands-on way to celebrate Juneteenth with your family? Crafts are a fun way to help kids connect with the holiday’s message. With just a few popsicle sticks, some markers or paint, and glue, you can create a Pan-African flag – a powerful symbol of pride and freedom in the Black community. You can also color a page featuring broken chains, representing the end of slavery and the significance of emancipation.

The Juneteenth Music Festival in Denver is a vibrant, family-friendly celebration you won’t want to miss. Happening Sunday, June 15 from 12-8 p.m. this free event honors Black culture, history, and community with live performances, a historic parade, delicious food, kid’s activities, local vendors, and more. Hosted in the heart of Denver’s Five Points neighborhood, the festival draws more than 20,000 attendees each year and offers something for all ages to enjoy. DPP will be on hand to share information about how Denver families can save on preschool costs. Be sure to check out our event page for future opportunities to engage with DPP out in the community.

Juneteenth is a chance to celebrate resilience, honor history, and nurture empathy in children of all ages. Whether curling up with a picture book, making a craft, or attending a local event, sharing the meaning of Juneteenth will help your preschooler grow with an understanding and respect for others.
