National Camping Month is in June and is a wonderful time of year to get outdoors and enjoy camping with kids of all ages. Even for adults who didn’t grow up camping, the outdoor activity can be a fun new adventure for all ages.
To make the most of camping with kids, Denver Preschool Program (DPP) gathered up a few tips to ensure your time under the stars is magical.
Tips for Camping with Kids
Before you set out on your first adventure camping with kids, be sure to think about the following:
- What type of camping you want to do: tent, RV, backpacking, or glamping. With preschoolers, keeping your first camping experience simple can often be the best approach. Here is a breakdown on the types of camping to consider.
- How long you want to go: shorter is often better for your first outing camping with kids. Consider a one-night adventure to begin with and build from that.
- What you want to do: are you planning to fish, hike, swim, cook dinner by the campfire? With preschoolers, having a plan and then a back-up plan can be helpful.
Practicing for your first camping adventure in your backyard or somewhere close to home is also a good idea. Whether in Colorado or another state, camping weather can be unpredictable, so pack clothing in layers; prepare for rain, wind, and unexpected storms; and bring activities that can be done in a tent or car if necessary. Also, be sure to pack plenty of snacks and food that will fend off any hangry moods.
