Sensory-friendly activities and environments are designed to reduce overstimulation – like bright lights, loud noises and crowded spaces – so children and adults with sensory sensitivities can feel more comfortable and at ease. These thoughtful adjustments can make it easier for families to enjoy everyday outings and special events together.
If you’re looking for inclusive ways to explore the city, check out our favorite sensory-friendly activities for families in and around Denver.
Sensory-Friendly Fun at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science
To help make visits comfortable for all members of the family, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS) offers a variety of sensory-friendly supports. Families can check out noise-reducing headphones and wobble cushions for free at the museum’s Information Desk.
Guests can also enjoy sensory-friendly films presented in 2D with reduced sound levels as well as access to designated quiet spaces throughout the museum. For those who prefer outdoor exploration, the museum’s outdoor area provides a lower-stimulation environment for children to play and discover.
In addition, DMNS hosts free, quarterly sensory-friendly events, giving families the opportunity to experience exhibits after hours in a more relaxed, low-crowd setting.
Certified Sensory-Friendly Community Partner
A certified sensory-friendly community partner, the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum offers a range of accommodations and activities to help all families enjoy their visit comfortably.
Sensory bags are available to check out for free at the admission desk and include noise-reducing headphones and fidget tools. The museum also provides a sensory-friendly map that highlights areas with bright or low lighting, varying noise levels and strong smells – helping families plan a visit that fits their needs.
Every third Sunday of the month, the museum hosts sensory-friendly activities and demonstrations from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Admission is free, though advanced registration is required.
Quarterly Sensory-Friendly Playtime at Wow! Children’s Museum
Held quarterly, Sensory-Friendly Playtime at the WOW! Children’s Museum gives children the opportunity to explore museum activities in a calmer environment with reduced crowds, lighting and sound. For added comfort, families can check out noise-reducing headphones and weighted vests during their visit. Admission on these days is $1 per person, and advanced registration is required.
Sensory-Friendly Films at AMC Theaters
Enjoy a movie together through AMC Theatre’s Sensory-Friendly Films, offered on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. These screenings feature recently released films with increased lighting and reduced sound, creating a more comfortable environment where movement, singing and dancing are welcome.
Sensory-Friendly Films are available at AMC Flatiron Crossing 14, AMC Highlands Ranch 24 and AMC Westminster Promenade 24.
